Hertford is situated along the banks of the Perquimans River, which flows into the Albemarle Sound. The town is approximately 25 miles south of the Virginia state line and about 45 miles west of the Outer Banks.

Perquimans River

Hertford is not located on the beach but instead is located on the banks of the Perquimans River. Perquimans River still has plenty to offer, like boating and kayaking. You can bring your own boat or rent one locally to explore the river's scenic beauty, navigate its calm waters, and enjoy a day on the river.

The Perquimans River is also known for its fishing opportunities. Anglers can try their luck at catching various species of fish, including bass, catfish, sunfish, and crappie. Make sure to obtain the necessary fishing licenses and follow any local regulations.

Hertford was established in 1758 and is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina. It was named after Hertford, England. The town played a significant role in the colonial and Revolutionary War eras, and it has a rich historical heritage.

Although Hertford is not located directly on the coastline, it is relatively close to several beaches along the North Carolina coast. Nags Head is located in the Outer Banks and is approximately just under an hour and a half. Kitty Hawk is another popular beach town in the Outer Banks and is located roughly an hour and 20 minutes away.

In case of an emergency, Vidant Chowan Hospital is 20 minutes north of Hertford and is open 24/7. For all of your traveling needs, Norfolk International Airport is 70 miles north and offers domestic and international flights.
