A Barrier Island 

Oak Island is a barrier island named after the oak trees that grow in the area. It has unique folklore that goes along with it. History recalls that it was inhabited by pirates who would hide their treasure on the island. 

History of the Trees

The live oak trees that give Oak Island its name have a rich history dating back to colonial times. During the colonial era, the live oak trees on Oak Island were highly prized for their durable wood used to build ships. Live oak wood is especially strong and resistant to rot and decay, making it ideal for shipbuilding. In fact, during the Revolutionary War, live oak was used to build the USS Constitution, one of the most famous ships in American history.

Today, the live oak trees continue to be an essential part of Oak Island's identity and natural beauty. The trees provide shade and habitat for various wildlife and are a beloved symbol of the island's history and heritage.

Plenty of Beach Access

Oak Island has five beaches with over 60 public access points altogether. It also has over 40 nature viewing or fishing locations for all anglers. Plus, with six boat and kayak launches, you'll never be bored on the beaches of Oak Island. 

Each beach area offers a different experience. With Long Beach being the central, most famous beach, you will see many families swimming, building castles, and having a good time in the sun. East Beach has a unique vibe with picnic tables, places to fish, and beachcombing. 

Necessities

Travel is always needed, and it's accessible at Oak Island. The closest airport is Wilmington International Airport, under an hour away. Along with that, it's important to always know where the nearest medical center is, and for Oak Island, that would be Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, 20 minutes away.
