About King George

King of Commonwealth

King George is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While King George County does not have direct access to the coast, it is located on the Northern Neck Peninsula, providing easy access to several nearby beaches.

Potomac River

King George sits right on the Virginia/Maryland line. Its closest access to water is in Fairview Beach, Virginia, which sits on the Potomac River. The Potomac River provides opportunities for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. You can rent boats or launch your own from the marina to explore the river and enjoy various water sports.

The area features a sandy beach where you can relax, swim, or sunbathe. It's a great spot to enjoy the waterfront ambiance and spend a leisurely day by the river. Fairview Beach has a few restaurants and cafes where you can grab a bite to eat or enjoy a drink with a waterfront view. Some establishments also offer live music and entertainment during the summer months.

Also situated along the Potomac River, Colonial Beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists. It offers sandy shores, calm waters, and beautiful views. The town has a charming beachfront area with restaurants, shops, and recreational facilities.

State Parks

In neighboring Westmoreland County, Westmoreland State Park is known for its fossil-rich cliffs and picturesque beach. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, hiking, and fossil hunting. The park also has cabins and campsites for overnight stays.

Although across the Potomac River in Maryland, Point Lookout State Park is easily accessible from King George. It features a sandy beach along the Chesapeake Bay, as well as fishing piers, picnic areas, and nature trails. The park also has a rich historical background as a former Civil War prison camp.
